HHS Region 8 -- Regional Director's Biography

Joe C. Nuñez was appointed to his position December 31, 2001. He represents the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in the six states of Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana. As the Secretary's Representative, Nuñez is responsible for promoting the initiatives of the department and the Administration of President George W. Bush.

Nuñez came to HHS from the Colorado House of Representatives where he served from January 1999 to December 2001. He was a member of the Appropriations Committee, served as Vice Chairman of the State, Military and Veterans' Affairs Committee, and was a member of the Education Committee. He received several awards, to include "Champion of the Taxpayer" awards for the 1999 and 2000 legislative sessions and "Guardian of the Taxpayer" award for the 2001 legislative session from the Colorado Union of Taxpayers (CUT). He also received 100 percent rating from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).

Nuñez is a veteran of 21 years Air Force service retiring as a Lt. Colonel. His assignments included serving as a Congressional Liaison Officer in the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force at the Pentagon.

He previously served as a member of the Reagan and Bush Administrations as the Secretary's Representative, Region VIII, for the U.S. Department of Labor.

Nuñez earned a MAE degree from InterAmerican University of Puerto Rico and a BA from the University of Northern Colorado. He is an honor graduate of the Japanese Language Institute, Yale University. He resides in Roxborough Park, CO with his wife of 40 years, Lilly. They have four children and ten grandchildren.
