Air Emissions Monitoring Study
Led by Purdue University, researchers from eight land-grant universities will take part in a 2-year, $14.6 million EPA study to measure levels of hydrogen sulfide, particulate matter, ammonia, nitrous oxide, volatile organic compounds, and other gases from livestock facilities. The research will be conducted at 24 sites in 9 states.
Partnering with Purdue University on the study are:
- University of California-Davis;
- Cornell University;
- Iowa State University;
- University of Minnesota;
- North Carolina State University;
- Texas A&M University; and,
- Washington State University.
A study led by University of Minnesota researchers and funded by the CSREES National Research Initiative (NRI) will add odor emission measurements data. The measurements will include both standard human sensory measurements and a novel chemical analysis technique for odorous compounds. The sensory and chemical methods would be correlated to gain both quantitative and qualitative understanding of odor emissions from animal buildings. Although odor is the air pollutant that plagues the animal industry with the greatest overall challenge, it is not included in the national study because the EPA does not regulate it. CSREES NRI funding will also help evaluate emissions from the national study's egg production barns in Indiana and compare the emissions to similar practices in Ohio to determine the type of barn that reduces emissions to the atmosphere.
