1. General Information

The Information Resource Center (IRC) is the home of 1-800-USA-LEARN (1-800-872-5327), the telephone number for information on the Department of Education's major education improvement priorities (e.g., reading, family involvement, technology). Services provided by the IRC include:

  • information on the Department's programs and agenda;
  • registration for satellite events;
  • directory assistance for the Department;
  • referrals to Department specialists or other experts; and
  • answers to frequently asked questions.

3. Publications

The Education Publications Center (ED Pubs) is the Department's one-stop center for access to ED information products, including publications, videos, brochures, posters, and other mailings. 4. Research & Statistics

The National Library of Education in the Institute of Education Sciences maintains a toll-free telephone line staffed by trained information specialists. Members of the public, including educators and researchers, typically call this number for information about education statistics and education research information. 5. Civil Rights Hotline

Call the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at 1-800-421-3481 to report any educational discrimination on the basis of race, sex, disability, etc., request information on civil rights compliance programs, procedures for filing discrimination complaints, or access to civil rights regulatory and policy documents. 6. Fraud, Waste & Abuse Hotline

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) provides a hotline for individuals to call to report fraud, waste, or abuse involving federal student aid funds or Department of Education funds, programs, or employees. Anyone having such knowledge should call 1-800-MIS-USED (1-800-647-8733). All callers can be assured of absolute confidentiality. Reports can also be submitted via email (to oig_hotline@ed.gov) or the OIG online complaint form.
