King County Juvenile Detention

    School

  • Detention School: All youth in the custody of King County Juvenile Detention are provided a standard school curriculum while in custody. Schooling is provided by Seattle Public School's Interagency Academy. Depending on the youth's age and school progress in the community, youth receive instruction in Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, and Life Skills appropriate for their prior level of achievement. In addition, youth may work towards their G.E.D. in the Detention School.

Special Education curriculum is also available in the Detention School if needed. In addition, the Seattle Schools teachers in the Detention School provide tutoring for status offender youth in the custody of Juvenile Detention.

  • Alder Academy: The Alder Academy, an Interagency Academy of the Seattle Pulic Schools is also based in the Youth Service Center building, however, it is not inside secure detention. Alder Academy serves students who are involved with the Division's Electronic Home Monitoring program, Juvenile Court involved youth, and status offenders. The curriculum of the Alder Academy is specially tailored to the needs of each of the youth involved.

  • Youth Source: Seattle Interagency Schools also provides instruction for youth that receive services at Youth Source. Youth Source works in close cooperation with Juvenile Detention's Day and Evening Reporting program to provide educational programming for youth attending Youth Source.
