Background
Bill has extensive experience in the development and validation of methods for measuring exposure of aquatic organisms to waterborne and sediment associated contaminants (polycyclic aromatic compounds [PACs] and chlorinated hydrocarbons). Recent research has focused on detection and measurement of contaminant exposed DNA in tissues and the use of DNA damage as an index of cumulative exposure to PACs. Bill Reichert holds a Bachelor of Science in chemistry (University of California-Berkeley 1965) and a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry (University of Washington 1971).
Current Research
Bill's current research interests are in the application of stable isotope ratio technology to assess trophic flow of marine derived nutrients into anadromous streams and riparian communities. Some questions he would like to address are: how will the nutrient dynamics of streams that were historically blocked by anthropogenic activity change when they are again accessible to anadromous fish; how fast will each of the various communities in these streams come to equilibrium with the resumed flow of marine-derived nutrients; what are the relative nitrogen and carbon inputs from the watershed as compared to marine derived nutrient contributions on an annual basis. In addition, Bill has oversight of the NWFSC stable isotope facility supporting Center scientists using stable isotope technology in their research.
