FEMA UPDATE STATUS OF FEMA INDIVIDUAL ASSISTANCE:
On August 23, 2008, following the initial impact from Tropical Storm Fay, Nassau County requested Preliminary Damage Assessment from FEMA to qualify the County for Public Assistance (PA) , Individual Assistance (IA) and Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster recovery programs. FEMA teams conducted an initial assessment on August 25 and approved the County for Public Assistance. At that time, significant flooding prevented a comprehensive assessment of many areas of the county.
On August 30, FEMA IA and SBA teams returned to conduct a follow-up assessment. On September 2, the County was notified that data gathered at that time was not adequate to qualify the County for IA and SBA assistance. On September 3, Nassau County Emergency Management requested re-assessment for both IA and SBA. FEMA teams are scheduled to return to the County for re-assessment today, Thursday, September 4, 2008.
As of this date, data collected by Nassau County Emergency Management indicates wind and flood damage from TS Fay impacted as many as 104 structures. Initial estimates of total damage costs to private property exceed $2.8 million.
Nassau County residents who have not already reported storm damage to private property should immediately notify Nassau County Emergency Management at 904-548-4980 or 1-800-958-3494 to assure that all damage has been documented.

Announcements
Hurricane Preparedness Cannot be Understated.
Unfortunately, a tax break for hurricane supplies was not granted for 2008. However, Nassau County citizens and business owners are still encouraged to continue updating disaster plans and replenish disaster supply kits with essential items such as:
Flashlights, two-way radios and weather-band radios, tarps, fuel containers, batteries, non-electrical food storage coolers, portable generators, carbon monoxide detectors and storm shutter devices.
