Substitutes for ODS Solvents in Adhesives, Coatings, and Inks

Substitutes are reviewed on the basis of ozone depletion potential, global warming potential, toxicity, flammability, and exposure potential. Lists of acceptable and unacceptable substitutes are updated several times each year. A chronological list of SNAP updates is available from the hotline. If your browser is unable to display tables, please call the hotline for a free paper copy.

Note: SNAP Notices and Final Rules published in the Federal Register take precedence over all information on this page.
Acceptable Substitutes for ODS in Adhesives, Coatings & Inks
Substitute ODS Being Replaced Comments
Petroleum Hydrocarbons Methyl Chloroform OSHA standards exist for many of these chemicals. Formulators should use chemicals with lowest toxicity, where possible.
Oxygenated solvents (Alcohols, Ketones, Ethers, and Esters) Methyl Chloroform OSHA standards exist for many of these chemicals. Formulators should use chemicals with lowest toxicity, where possible.
Chlorinated solvents (methylene chloride, trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene) Methyl Chloroform High inherent toxicity. Use only when necessary. OSHA and RCRA standards must be met.
Terpenes Methyl Chloroform None
Water-based formulations Methyl Chloroform None
High-solid formulations Methyl Chloroform None
Alternative technologies (e.g., powder, hot melt, thermoplastic plasma spray, radiation-cured, moisture-cured, chemical-cured, and reactive liquid) Methyl Chloroform None
Hydrofluoroether (HFE) 7100: C4F9OCH3 (methoxynona-fluorobutane, iso and normal) CFC-113, Methyl Chloroform, HCFC-141b None
HFE-7200 (C4F9OC2H5) CFC-113, Methyl Chloroform, HCFC-141b None
Substitutes for ODS Subject to Use Conditions in Adhesives, Coatings & Inks
Substitute ODS Being Replaced Conditions or Restrictions Comments
Monochlorotoluene / Benzotrifluorides CFC-113, Methyl Chloroform, HCFC-141b The workplace standard for monochlorotoluenes is based on an OSHA PEL of 50 ppm for orthochlorotoluene. The acceptable exposure limit (AEL) for benzotrifluorides is 100 ppm.
Trans-1,2-dichloroethylene CFC-113, Methyl Chloroform The OSHA set exposure limit (PEL) is 200 ppm. None
Unacceptable Substitutes for ODS in Adhesives, Coatings & Inks
Substitute ODS Being Replaced Comments
Chlorobromomethane CFC-113, Methyl Chloroform Other alternatives exist with zero or much lower ODP.
