The Citizens' Advocate Office accepts written complaints about Child Support Enforcement and Family Support Registry. All cases are referred to Office of Consumer Relations, Department of Human Services, for assistance.

A. Yes.
The Citizens' Advocate Office accepts written complaints about the Division of Motor Vehicles. All cases are referred to Department of Revenue for assistance.

A. Yes.
The Citizens' Advocate Office accepts written complaints about the Colorado Motorist Insurance Identification Program and Explore Information Services . All cases are referred to Department of Revenue for assistance.

Q. Does the Citizens' Advocate Office assist with Local Government issues?
A. No.
Colorado is a "local control" state. Efforts to address local government issues must be handled at the city or county level. It is best to work through the chain of command in the appropriate department or with the highest elected official in your city or county.

Q. Does the Citizens' Advocate Office accept Police Department or Sheriff's Office complaints?
A. No.
Complaints about police departments and sheriff's offices must be initiated through the internal affairs investigate process in the respective city or county office. As Colorado is a local control state, there is not an agency that exists to oversee individual municipalities and counties.

Q. Does the Citizens' Advocate Office accept complaints against a Federal Agency?
A. No.
The Governor does not have jurisdiction over federal matters as he presides over the State of Colorado. Federal agency complaints, including Social Security, Immigration & Naturalization Services, Veterans Administration, Medicare, and the Military are accepted by federal offices. Please contact your U.S. Senator or Congressman.

Q. Does the Citizens' Advocate Office accept complaints about courts, judges, or attorneys?
A. No.
The Governor has no jurisdiction over the Judicial Branch. The Governor's Office cannot intervene in court cases, overturn decisions made by judges, or offer legal advice.

Q. Does the Citizens' Advocate Office assist with Child Custody cases?
A. No.
The Governor has no jurisdiction over individual court cases, including child custody. Custody decisions are made in a court of law and must be handled through the judicial process. If you have concerns about a Guardian Ad Litem, you may contact the Office of the Child Representative at 303-860-1517. You may also contact the Office of Consumer Relations, Department of Human Services at 303-866-5825 for possible assistance.

Q. Does the Citizen's Advocate Corp accept probation or probation officer complaints?
A. No.
These complaints are addressed by the Chief Probation Officer of the district the probation is registered.

 

Q. When should the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) Customer Service Hotline be utilized?
A. Although CDHS benefits and services are provided at the local service facility or county  office, the CDHS Hotline is used to gain more information or to file a complaint regarding any service concerns.
