My name is Mary Jo Partyka and I live at 40 Samdin Blvd. in
Trenton. I am submitting comments, concerning the bill which the Access Board
wants to pass in regard to the audible traffic signals.
I have never seen an audible traffic signal in operation. But
as a person who has been blind all my life, I think that these signals could
actually be more distracting. They also take away the blind person's faculty
of judgment. If a blind person listens and waits until all the parallel
traffic has passed, he should know that this is the appropriate time to make a
street crossing. In some communities these signals may be needed but not
everywhere. Having these audible traffic signals also instills in the minds of
the public that blind people aren't able to make decisions about when to cross
the street and this isn't true. We need to make the public see us as more
capable, not less so.
