It’s hard to beat the heat in late summer and early fall!  Sweltering temperatures can seem overwhelming for any activity, and range tours are no exception.  However, for landowners and land enthusiasts, a day in the heat is well worth the time to help improve their land or to assist in conservation development of others.

Mike Beard was named the 2007 recipient of the Pork Industry Environmental Steward AwardIndiana Pork Producer Honored with National Environmental Stewardship Award
An Indiana pork operation has been selected as one of four farms in the United States for outstanding environmental stewardship by the National Pork Checkoff Board.  Meadowlane Farms, of Clinton County, is receiving the National Pork Checkoff Board's 2007 "Pork Industry Environmental Steward Award."  This annual program was designed to honor operations that have demonstrated their commitment to protecting the environment while conducting their day-to-day activities.

Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 (through October 15) the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries — Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on September 16 and Chile on September 18.  Hispanic Heritage Month has been celebrated in the United States since 1974, when President Gerald Ford issued a Presidential Proclamation extending Hispanic Heritage Week into a month-long observance.  The theme for this year's Hispanic Heritage Month is "Hispanic Americans: Making a Positive Impact on American Society."

Remote Sensing to Help Wetlands Reserve Program Managers
The Resources Inventory and Assessment Division (RIAD) and the Remote Sensing Laboratories (RSL) are working with the Easement Programs Division (EPD) to leverage the investments NRCS has made in technology and training at the RSL. RIAD and the RSL are currently working with EPD to use remote sensing to help States monitor maintenance and program compliance needs of Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) easements.

NRCS This Week features a weekly historical photo and caption.  NHQ, districts, States, RC&D councils, and all other NRCS entities are invited to submit a historical photo of activities or individuals who have worked or are working for the agency along with a caption.
