The University of Illinois’ Department of Human and
Community Development received a CSREES Higher Education
Challenge Grant in 2003 (agreement
number: 2003-38411-13447) to explore and describe the
use of learner-centered teaching methods involving agriculture
curricula in the U.S. The findings will serve as a resource
for future agriculture faculty interested in implementing
learner-centered methods.
High quality educational programs enable faculty to transform
students into productive citizens and professionals who are
capable of thinking critically, solving problems, and making
meaningful contributions to society. With such outcomes in
mind, this project will:
- make research-based findings available for how to increase
teaching effectiveness throughout the agricultural sciences;
- increase knowledge about learner-centered teaching methods;
- make teaching resources available asynchronously;
- facilitate networks of college teachers who share interests
in active, inquiry, and service learning across the disciplines
of food, agricultural, and environmental sciences, and
foster greater adoption and integration of these teaching
methods;
- provide faculty development through one national and
four regional workshops;
- publish an online directory of teaching faculty who use
learner-centered approaches;
- develop a web site of electronic teaching resources,
and;
- publish a bulletin on learner-centered teaching methods
to help faculty adopt and integrate active, inquiry, and
service learning methods into college courses.
