Transplanting Permits Available from the Shoshone National Forest

March 25, 2008 Cody, WY - Beginning April 1, permits for trees and shrubs will be available from Shoshone National Forest offices. All species of trees and shrubs are available for transplanting.
Permits must be obtained before heading to the woods. Permits cost $5 per tree or shrub with a maximum tree height of eight feet.
There is a minimum purchase of four trees or shrubs and a maximum of 10 transplant permits per household per calendar year.
The Forest Service offers these tips for transplanting:

  1. For best survival, remove trees before bud burst (leaves or new needles showing).
  2. Keep the main root mass attached to the plant. Severing a large number of roots will reduce the plant’s ability to absorb moisture and nutrients. Keep a ball of dirt around the roots to protect them.
  3. Wrap the plant’s roots in cloth or other porous material while transporting. Do not use plastic.
  4. Replant promptly, leaving a dike around the stem for water retention. Water thoroughly. The plant can be supported if necessary, using stakes and rope or wire. Place rubber hose or other material between the stem and the support to prevent abrasion.
  5. A wheelbarrow would be helpful in moving plants to your vehicle and can help reduce excessive off-road travel.

Permits are available in Cody at the Wapiti Ranger District, 203A Yellowstone Avenue; in Dubois at the Wind River Ranger District, 1403 West Ramshorn; and in Lander at the Washakie Ranger District, 333 East Main Street. For more information about transplant permits, contact Carl Jungck in Dubois at 455.2466, Barb Gustin in Lander at 332.5460, or Brad Eckert in Cody at 527.6921.
