Science in Your Watershed

Watershed Analysis:

  • U.S. Geological Survey

  • - National Water -Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program - Studies in more than 50 major river basins and aquifers covering nearly all 50 states, USGS scientists collect and interpret data about water chemistry, hydrology, land use, stream habitat, and aquatic life.
    - National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) - Publications - A listing of the NAWQA Study Unit reports and publications. The information provides an unbiased scientific basis for managers, planners, and policy makers at all levels-local, state, and national-to make decisions for the protection of drinking water, the health of aquatic ecosystems, and for resource management.
-(SPARROW) - SPAtially Referenced Regressions On Watershed Attributes (Model) SPARROW relates in-stream water-quality measurements to spatially referenced characteristics of watersheds, including contaminant sources and factors influencing terrestrial and stream transport. The model empirically estimates the origin and fate of contaminants in streams, and quantifies uncertainties in these estimates based on model coefficient error and unexplained variability in the observed data.
    - Water, Energy, and Biogeochemical Budgets- (WEBB) A program for small watershed research. To understand the processes controlling water, energy, and biogeochemical fluxes over a range of temporal and spatial scales and to understand the interactions of these processes, including the effect of atmospheric and climatic variables.
    - Water Resources Applications Software -The software and related documentation on these Web pages were developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for use by the USGS in fulfilling its mission. The software can be used, copied, modified, and distributed without any fee or cost.
    - USGS Water Quality Information Pages - The Office of Water Quality provides leadership and coordination in the development of programs to address issues concerning the quality of the Nation's surface-water and ground-water resources, and provides support in the application of techniques for the collection, analysis, and interpretation of water-quality data.
    - Ground Water (A short publication on) - How Ground Water Occurs - Quality of Ground Water - Appraising the Nations Ground-Water Resources
    - Ground-Water Information Pages These pages are designed to provide useful information about ground-water resources of the Nation and ground-water activities of the USGS.
    - Surf Your Watershed - Surf Your Watershed is a service to help you locate, use, and share environmental information about your state and watershed. Try Locate Your Watershed, Adopt Your Watershed and Environmental Websites for additional information.
    - Targeted Watersheds - The Targeted Watersheds Grant Program is a relatively new EPA program designed to encourage successful community-based approaches and management techniques to protect and restore the nation's waters.
    - Water Quality Standards - Water Quality Standards are the foundation of the water quality-based pollution control program mandated by the Clean Water Act. Water Quality Standards define the goals for a waterbody by designating its uses, setting criteria to protect those uses, and establishing provisions to protect waterbodies from pollutants. .
  • Clean Water Action - Clean Water Action is a national citizens' organization working for clean, safe and affordable water, prevention of health-threatening pollution, creation of environmentally-safe jobs and businesses, and empowerment of people to make democracy work.
  • Clean Water Fund - Clean Water Fund's Watershed to Watertap programs combine action and education for clean and safe water in neighborhoods around the country.
