REASON FOR
ALERT: In early FY 92, LOS-DO sampled five entries of peanut
confections manufactured by Mazapan de la Rosa, S.A. de C.V.
Analysis revealed aflatoxin in all 5 shipments with levels in
excess of 20 ppb. Mazapan is a candy containing sugar,
peanuts, and artificial flavoring.
In July 1992, New York District found 2 samples of a snack
product imported from Thailand, to contain aflatoxin at an
actionable level. A 500 gm can contained 34 ppb (40 ppb
check) and a 180 gm can contained 69 ppb (65 ppb check). The
product is a canned snack food, a dry coated peanut product
rather than "peanuts in coconut milk" as the label would
indicate. The coating contains wheat flour as principal
ingredient, followed by sugar, salt, vegetable oil (not
identified), and coconut milk.
In February of 1996, Dallas District detained an entry of
"Barcel" brand hot peanuts for aflatoxin. Analysis revealed
aflatoxin contamination at 78.2 ppb in original analysis and
99.8 ppb and 126 ppb respectively in check analyses.
**In October, 1997, Dallas District detained an entry of
shelled pecans from Mexico for aflatoxin. Laboratory analysis
found 62.5 ppb aflatoxin (26.3 ppb and 31.4 ppb check
analyses).**
