Question
Is mars soon to be around 25 million miles from earth in august? but in which direction does it come up at night?
This month Mars is near lts farthest point from the Earth, behind the Sun, and it is not observable. You may be victim to an "urban legend" on the web. Mars was very close in August 2003, and every year this story seems to get updated and recirculated. For good current information on observing the planets, see Sky & Telescope or Astronomy magazines (both widely available) or check websites such as Sky & Telescope at [http://www.skypub.com].
