GLOSSARY
Adaptive management
process
Adaptive management promotes an environment for testing hypotheses and
exploring promising changes based on sound scientific data and analyses. For the
Master Manual process this means monitoring and evaluating actual physical and
biological responses to changes in management of the system and then adapting
new management strategies based on the additional information.
Evapotranspiration
Water transferred from water bodies or soil to the atmosphere through
evaporation or transpiration.
Flow exceedance
percentiles
Calculated percent of the time that a given flow is equaled or exceeded.
Flow frequency
How often flows occur in a given time-period.
For the purposes of this report, flow frequency is calculated as a flow-exceedance
percentile for each day of the year.
Water control rules
A set of rules for how reservoirs are operated to achieve the purposes for which
the Missouri River is managed such as navigation, flood control, hydropower
production, drought conservation, reservoir unbalancing, and environmental
objectives.
