Trails

September 25, 2008

Check portlandhikers.org for updated trail conditions from other hikers.  Trail condition reports to 541-308-1700 and portlandhikers.com are appreciated.

The gate to Larch Mountain at milepost 10 is open.

A popular hiking loop is Rucket #405 to Eagle-Benson #434 in the Mark O. Hatfield wilderness and back down Eagle Creek #440.  However, the Eagle-Benson trail #434 is overgrown and has many logs over it making route-finding very difficult.  This trail is not recommended.

Herman Creek campground and trailhead gate is now open.

The bridge on Oneonta trail #424 just above Triple Falls has a two-person load limit. Notice: this bridge may be closed this fall so Oneonta Trail will not be passable until a new bridge is in.

The bridge on the Gorge #400 trail behind Wyeth campground is out.  Creek may become impassable in the spring. See map of closure.

Fires are not allowed within 200 feet of trails in the Scenic Area at any time of the year. Gas stoves are allowed.

All campgrounds are closed: Wyeth, Eagle Creek, Eagle Creek Overlook and Herman Creek.

In the past, reservations for the Eagle Creek Overlook group site have been made directly through the Hood River office.  The Overlook is now available for reservation only through www.recreation.gov.  (This was formerly ReserveUSA.com.  If you go to ReserveUSA, you will be re-directed to recreation.gov.)  Reservations can be made 360 days in advance.

Eagle Creek, Wyeth and Herman Creek do not accept reservations; however they generally have open sites except on holiday weekends (Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day).    Arriving any weekday, especially before 3 PM, you will generally find a site.
