Who and Where?
Clear Lake Education Center is a place for people of all ages to come and connect with their natural world through integrated educational and recreational programs.
The programs offered at Clear Lake Education Center (CLEC) focus on environmental sciences, cultural history, natural resource careers, personal growth and team building.
You feel as though you are leaving the world behind as you reach the quiet setting that comprises CLEC's 22 acres. Located deep in the heart of the Hiawatha National Forest 20 miles south of Munising the Center is the only occupant on the shores of the beautiful waters of Clear Lake. Clear Lake Education Center is surrounded by National Forest land making it the perfect secluded spot to get in touch with the natural world. Wildlife abounds with loons, wolves, bears and an abundance of deer. Currently Clear Lake Education Center is open from late April through late October.
Facilities and Location
A visit to Clear Lake Education Center is a step back in time. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the camp in the late 1930's. The facilities blend a rustic feel with modern conveniences. The eight dormitory style cabins are nestled in a northern hardwoods forest adjacent to Clear Lake. Facilities can accommodate up to 98 people.
Facilities include:
- Eight heated cabins that sleep 12 people. (Bedding is not supplied)
- Furnished classroom building, includes fireplace, tables, chairs and projection screen. Office includes copy machine, and fax. Handicap accessible room with private bathroom.
- Dining Hall and kitchen includes new gas stove, walk in refrigerator, and commercial dishwasher.
- Two modern restrooms, each with handicap accessible showers.
Recreational opportunities include:
- Amphitheater with fire ring
- Canoe rentals
- Volleyball and basketball courts
- Baseball diamond
- Two-mile trail around Clear Lake
- Swimming area and dock
Facility Rentals
When CLEC is not being used for outdoor education camps, others can rent the facilities. During the summer and fall, community organizations, churches, scouts, and families use Clear Lake Education Center for camps, retreats and meetings. Call for availability and rental fees.
May 2005: Clear Lake Education received the Education Excellence award from the Michigan Association of School Boards.
September 2005: the Center was awarded the prestigious Michigan's Best Award.
