Welcome! Motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death among American Indians and Alaska Natives ages 1-44 (According to CDC, 10 leading causes of Death 1998). In fact, Native Americans are dying in motor vehicle crashes two to three times more than other Americans. Over 8 million dollars a year are being spent on these traffic related injuries and deaths. This deadly phenomenon is affecting the younger members of the communities the most. Native Americans between the ages 15 to 34 have the highest motor vehicle death rates. In order to save the lives of this generation and the next, that are dying in car crashes, and to promote healthy families and communities, NHTSA has created programs, formed relationships, and implemented campaigns that target the traffic safety of American Indian and Alaska Native communities. The American Indian and Alaska Native web site is designed to give you direct access to NHTSA's traffic safety activities, contacts, events, materials, and ideas that are tailored specifically to American Indian and Alaska Native populations in the United States to assist you in making some changes in your community to save lives. |
