ATF DIRECTOR CARL J. TRUSCOTT ADDRESSES
ACADEMY OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCIENCES ANNUAL MEETING

WASHINGTON – Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Director Carl J. Truscott delivered an address today to the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in Chicago.

Our future, ATF’s role was the theme of the speech. “The men and women who work in the criminal justice system help create a safe future by preventing terrorism, reducing violent crime, and protecting the public” Director Truscott told the assembled group.

“ATF’s mission is critical. We are responsible for some of the most dangerous tools criminals and terrorists use to create mayhem in today’s world,” said Director Truscott. “Our job is to protect America and strengthen public safety worldwide.”

Director Truscott stressed the importance of partnerships including those between governmental agencies and the world of academics. “Our academic partners can help us effectively direct our resources and document our progress,” said Director Truscott.

Academic research has significantly contributed to our successes such as the Violent Crime Impact Teams (VCIT). VCIT teams are led by ATF agents and include Federal, State, and local law enforcement, U.S. Attorneys and State prosecutors and are active in 15 cities. The goal of VCIT is to remove the “worst of the worst” violent offenders from those cities.

James Finckenauer, President of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, stated “Director Truscott provided considerable food for thought and challenges for the students and researchers alike.”

The Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences promotes criminal justice education, research, and policy analysis within the discipline of criminal justice for both educators and practitioners.
