ATF NAMES NEW ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR
STRATEGIC INTELLIGENCE AND INFORMATION

 

WASHINGTON – Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Director Carl J. Truscott announced today the selection of James E. McDermond as Assistant Director of the Office of Strategic Intelligence and Information (OSII), which is responsible for the collection, analysis and dissemination of information within ATF, as well as interaction with the national and international intelligence communities.

McDermond, 47, joins ATF following a 21-year career with the U.S. Secret Service. He will oversee ATF’s intelligence and information resources, including the Arson and Explosives National Repository, which maintains all national information on arson and explosives incidents; the Bomb and Arson Tracking System, which allows state, local and other federal law enforcement agencies to share information about such cases and incidents; and Dfuze, a similar explosives database for international use.

“We’re pleased to welcome Jim McDermond to ATF and know that his extensive experience and outstanding management skills will serve the Bureau well,” Truscott said.

At the Secret Service, McDermond was the deputy assistant director of the Office of Homeland Security. In that capacity, he was the Secret Service Director’s senior representative at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), responsible for coordination between the Secret Service and the senior leadership of DHS and its component agencies.

McDermond earlier served as the special agent in charge of the Information Resources Management Division, directing the division that develops, provides and manages the information technology to support the protective and investigative missions and associated administrative functions of the Secret Service worldwide.

McDermond, a native of Philadelphia, earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from West Chester University in Pennsylvania in 1978 and graduated from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in 1979. He and his wife, Diane, have three children.
