| Strategic Actions For Emergencies (SAFE) is the CERT program in the City of Milpitas. Recommended by the Milpitas Citizens Emergency Preparedness Advisory Committee, SAFE is sponsored and taught by the Milpitas Fire Department. The program is neighborhood oriented and its goal is to train teams of twelve to twenty in each neighborhood to help their families, their neighbors, and the community in the event of an emergency or major disaster.
In cooperation with the Milpitas Unified School District, seven weekday evening classes are taught at the elementary school in each new team's neighborhood. SAFE classes include disaster awareness and preparedness, fighting small fires, first aid and triage, light search and rescue, team dynamics and terrorism.
A Saturday hands on exercise completes the training and graduated teams are given backpacks with personal protective equipment. Periodic follow on training imparts new skills and maintains team cohesiveness.
Participation is free for Milpitas residents. |
