What is Citizen Corps?

Citizen Corps is a network of volunteer organizations that use the abilities of citizens to prepare communities for the threats of terrorism, crime and natural disasters.

The Citizen Corps Affiliate Program expands the resources and materials available to states and local communities by partnering with Programs and Organizations that offer resources for public education, outreach, and training; represent volunteers interested in helping to make their community safer; or offer volunteer service opportunities to support first responders, disaster relief activities, and community safety efforts.

It is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and recognized by both the State and Local Emergency Management agencies.

Welcome!

To the members of the Monroe County community:

As a Citizen Corps volunteer, you will take part in making our community safer, stronger and better prepared to respond to threats and disasters of all kinds.

Working in partnership with Monroe County Emergency Management, more than 50 local residents have been CERT trained to support the initial local response to natural disasters before first responders arrive on the scene. These CERT volunteers have been trained in basic disaster response skills including fire suppression, light search & rescue and medical operations.

In times of disasters, neighbors will have to reach out and assist each other and the mission of the Citizen Corps program is to work with local disaster response and recovery agencies to better prepare our community.

This past September (National Preparedness Month), the Citizen Corps teamed up with WGCL to distribute All-Hazard Weather Radios and we continually seek out ways to reach out to all corners of Monroe County.

We encourage you to contact us if you would like to get involved or would like to learn more about the Citizen Corps progrram.

Sincerely,
Mark J. Brostoff
Chair, Monroe County Citizen Corps
