About the Office: The United States Attorney’s Office prosecutes federal criminal offenses, and prosecutes and defends the U.S. Government’s interest in civil cases. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Wisconsin is located in Madison, Wisconsin.

Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: The United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Wisconsin is currently seeking a highly qualified applicant for an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) vacancy in the Civil Division.

AUSAs in the Civil Division may be responsible for a wide range of both affirmative and defensive civil litigation on behalf of the United States, its agencies, and officials. AUSAs prosecute civil cases in such areas as defense contractor, health care and government programs fraud; environmental enforcement; and civil rights. AUSAs also defend the federal government and its officials from constitutional and procedural challenges and from civil actions alleging claims in a broad spectrum of practice areas, including but not limited to, employment discrimination, torts, immigration, federal programs, and federal benefits. AUSAs also handle cases involving the collection of debts owed the government and crime victims, and bankruptcy matters. This AUSA position will primarily handle civil defensive litigation.

Qualifications: Required qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction), and have at least 1 year post-J.D. experience, which can include a judicial law clerkship. If the successful candidate is not a member of the Wisconsin State Bar and is not eligible to become a member of the Wisconsin Bar through reciprocity, he or she will be expected to favorably complete the Wisconsin Bar examination at the next available opportunity following appointment to this position.

Applicants must demonstrate strong analytical skills, and superior oral and writing skills, as well as strong research and interpersonal skills. Applicants must possess excellent communication skills, good judgement, and exhibit the ability to work in a supportive, professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, and client agencies. Applicants must have a demonstrated capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment.

Travel: Occasional travel, both within and outside the District, may be required.

Salary Information: AUSA pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number years of professional attorney experience. Salary for this position is limited by budget funds available. Salary for this position will range from a base of $42,684 to $72,433, plus a locality pay of 13.18%.

Location: The duty location is Madison, Wisconsin. Madison, Wisconsin’s capital city, is built on an isthmus between the lakes of Monona and Mendota. Madison is renowned for its beautiful scenery, and is routinely rated one of America’s best communities in which to live, work, and play. Madison has a total of five area lakes and more than 260 city parks that create the perfect setting for year-round outdoor activities, from hiking, biking, swimming and sailing, along with cross-country skiing, snow sailing, and ice fishing.

Home of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison also has Big Ten football, basketball, and hockey, as well as other local sporting events. Madison also offers many cultural opportunities, such as the Madison Opera and Madison Symphony, Madison Repertory Theater, touring productions at Overture Center for the Arts, and a variety of performances at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s many venues. It also home to the UW Arboretum, Olbrich Botanical gardens, and one of the largest outdoor local Farmers’ Markets in the country.
