Geographic Areas of Assignments

Summer Law Intern Program (SLIP): The majority of SLIP positions are in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. The Antitrust Division and the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) offer SLIP internships outside the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. All other components offer SLIP internships for Washington, D.C., only. U.S. Attorney's Offices do not currently hire interns through the SLIP.

Antitrust Division: The Antitrust Division offers SLIP internships in its seven regional field offices (located in Atlanta, Cleveland, Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New York City), and Washington, D.C. Applicants may indicate their geographic preferences on the application.

Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR): EOIR offers SLIP internships in the Office of the Chief Administrative Hearing Officer and the Board of Immigration Appeals, both located in Falls Church, Virginia (near Washington, D.C.) and for positions in the Immigration Courts located nationwide. Applicants to EOIR may be asked to state geographic preferences if selected for further consideration.

Volunteer Legal Intern Recruitment The Department of Justice selects approximately 1800 volunteer interns annually. A significant number of volunteer internships are with 94 U.S. Attorneys' Offices, the 52 Immigration Courts, and Department field offices in cities nationwide . The remaining internships are with Department offices located in Washington, D.C.

Internship opportunities with the Department's management offices, litigating divisions and offices, legal and policy offices, and investigatory and law enforcement offices are generally located in Washington, D.C. The posted announcements identify organizations with offices outside Washington, D.C.

If you are interested in volunteering at a specific office that does not list internship opportunities, you can contact the office directly to explore possible options. Please note that not all field offices employ legal interns.
