GRAND RAPIDS MAN RECEIVES HARD TIME FOR FEDERAL GUN CHARGE
TUESDAY, MAY 6, 2008 -
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Eric Thomas Latham, age 26, of Lansing, Michigan, was
sentenced to 105 months’ incarceration for possessing a firearm – a .40 caliber semiautomatic
handgun – as a felon, U.S. Attorney Charles R. Gross announced today. In addition to the prison
term, U. S. District Court Judge Paul L. Maloney ordered Latham to serve three years of supervised
release.
Latham was apprehended following an eight-mile car and foot chase in Lansing, Michigan. Lansing police had responded to a report of gunshots near the Mt. Vernon Apartment complex and saw Latham running from the apartments to a vehicle. During the car chase, Latham threw two firearms out of his car window. The Police eventually caught him after a foot chase near the Hildebrandt Apartment Complex, also in Lansing. Latham has an extensive criminal record, including domestic violence, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of cocaine and several assaults.
U.S. Attorney Gross commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives
and the Lansing Police Department for their work on the case. U.S. Attorney Gross noted that “the citizens of Lansing should understand that, as part of our Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, we
remain fully committed to vigorously enforcing federal law against convicted felons possessing
firearms.” The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie Ann Woods.
