Our district is bordered by the Mississippi River on the east and the Missouri River on the west. Iowa's slogan, "Field of Opportunities," refers both to our national reputation for outstanding agricultural production and our worldwide reputation for superior educational and technological opportunities.
Iowa's sightseeing opportunities range from historic frontier forts to the baseball "Field of Dreams" to culturally rich cities. You can find the paintings of Iowan Grant Wood and the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. You can travel the route of the Underground Railroad and see the Iowa homes and buildings that served as "stations" for people fleeing slavery. You can also tour the Amana Colonies, which are seven authentic German villages originally founded as a religious commune in the mid-19th century. The colonies are world famous for their German restaurants, winery, and fine craft shops.
Iowans have a long history of public service. Per capita, Iowa sent the largest number of men to fight for the union in the civil war.
Iowa is divided into two federal districts, Northern and Southern, with a total combined population of 2.9 million. The District consists of 52 counties spanning more than 25,120 square miles. It includes the Meskwaki Indian Settlement in eastern Iowa and small portions of the Winnebago and Omaha Indian reservations in western Iowa.
The office is headquartered in the eastern Iowa city of Cedar Rapids. It is Iowa's second largest city and home to the famous National Czech & Slovak Museum and Library. The museum, dedicated in 1995, is the largest of its kind in the United States and is centered in a vibrant and long-established Czech community.
A staffed branch office is located in Sioux City, on the western border of the state. The first National Historical Landmark registered in the United States, the Sergeant Floyd Monument, can be found in Sioux City. Sergeant Charles Floyd was the only member of the Lewis and Clark expedition to die (in 1804) during their trek across the country. A 100-foot white stone obelisk marks Sergeant Floyd's burial place at the top of a bluff overlooking the Missouri River.
The US Attorney's Office is comprised of 15 Assistant United States Attorneys in Cedar Rapids and 6 in Sioux City. Additionally there are three High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) attorneys, two in Cedar Rapids and one in Sioux City. The office is also supported by paralegals, legal assistants, an auditor, a Victim Witness Specialist, a Law Enforcement Coordinator (LECC), IT and administrative staff, and several students. Together we are 55 dedicated employees who work in different sections such as; Criminal, Civil, Financial Litigation, Drugs and Violent Crime, LECC and Administration.
