Release of Belarusian Political Prisoners

The United States welcomes the August 20 release of the last two Belarusian political prisoners, Syarhey Parsyukevich and Andrey Kim, which follows the August 16 release of Alyaksandr Kazulin, by the Government of Belarus.

The release of these individuals, combined with what we hope will be further positive steps, offers the real possibility of a significant improvement in relations between the United States and Belarus.

In light of this development, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs David A. Merkel will travel to Minsk later today for meetings with Belarusian officials and members of the democratic opposition.
