P. Buckley Moss Endowed Scholarship
 
  • Scholarship(s) of at least $1,500 will be awarded to one or more high school seniors with financial need, a certified language-related learning difference, and artistic talent who plan a career in visual arts.
  • Scholarships are potentially renewable for up to three additional years.

Applications must be postmarked no later than March 1.

In keeping with the goals of renowned artist P. Buckley Moss, who struggled with dyslexia during her school years, this scholarship represents her dedication to young people who have learning disabilities and are aspiring towards a career in the visual arts.

Pat attended Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City. Established in 1859, Cooper Union is the only private, full-scholarship college in the United States dedicated exclusively to preparing students for the professions of art, architecture, and engineering.

Criteria for eligibility for the P. Buckley Moss Endowed Scholarship include:

  • Graduating high school senior
  • Verified specific language-related learning disability
  • Verified financial need
  • Visual arts talent
  • Acceptance to accredited four-year college or university or two-year community college
  • Intent to pursue career in a visual arts field

Nominations for the P. Buckley Moss Endowed Scholarship can be made only by members of the P. Buckley Moss Society.

About the Endowment

The Society administers the promotion of this scholarship and narrows the field of applicants. The P. Buckley Moss Foundation for Children’s Education manages the endowment. Designees from both organizations plus Pat or her designee select the final recipient.

To make a donation to the P. Buckley Moss Endowed Scholarship fund, send your check made payable to P. Buckley Moss Foundation, 152 P. Buckley Moss Dr., Waynesboro, VA 22980.

The P. Buckley Moss Foundation is a certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and all donations to the Scholarship Fund are tax deductible. Please note on your check that the funds are for this endowment.

Application Requirements

  • Nomination by a P. Buckley Moss Society member (brief letter from nominator stating relationship is optional).
  • Verification of a language-related learning disability. Provide a letter (maximum two pages) from your case manager or counselor which details diagnostic information and progress. Do not send an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
  • High school transcript.
  • Two letters of recommendation, one from a faculty member at your school and the other from someone who knows you outside of the school setting (not from a relative).
  • Evidence of financial need; please submit parents’ most recent 1040 tax form.
  • Essay responses to the following three questions (be specific and convincing):
    1. Select three words that best describe you and provide evidence and examples of how you exhibit these qualities.
    2. Explain your specific learning disability, how it has challenged you, specific strategies you have used to cope, and the effects it has had on your life.
    3. Where do you intend to go to school and why there? How do you plan to use your artistic talent? (e.g., What do you see yourself doing in 10 years with your art?)
  • THREE copies of a portfolio consisting of 4 to 6 photos of visual art projects.

The P. Buckley Moss Society reserves the right not to award the scholarship in a year when a suitable candidate is not nominated.
