CDC Publications

Cases of HIV infection and AIDS in the United States, 2002. This report describes adolescents and adults with a new HIV and AIDS diagnosis, deaths among adolescents and adults with an AIDS diagnosis, and adolescents and adults living with an AIDS diagnosis, by age in the United States in 2002.

Cases of HIV infection and AIDS in the United States, 2003. This report, published annually, contains information about U.S. AIDS and HIV case reports, including data by state, metropolitan statistical area, mode of exposure to HIV, sex, race/ethnicity, age group, vital status, and case definition category.

Guidelines for Effective School Health Education to Prevent the Spread of AIDS were developed to help school personnel and others plan, implement, and evaluate educational efforts to prevent HIV infection.

HIV/AIDS Prevention Research Synthesis Compendium. The interventions in the Compendium have been identified by CDC's HIV/AIDS Prevention Research Synthesis Project (PRS) as having rigorous study methods and demonstrated evidence of effectiveness in reducing sex- and drug-related risk behaviors or improving health outcomes.

Emerging Answers: Research Findings on Programs to Reduce Teen Pregnancy [pdf 90K]. This study conducted by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy examines whether there is good evidence demonstrating that one or more abstinence-only programs actually delay sex and/or reduce teen pregnancies.

The Evaluation of Abstinence Education Programs Funded Under Title V Section 510: Interim Report [pdf 320K]. Published by Mathematica Policy Research, Inc., this report notes that most of the programs studied offer much more than "just say no." In addition to delivering a clear and consistent message of abstinence until marriage, programs focus on building self-esteem, developing values, formulating goals, making decisions, avoiding risky behavior, maximizing communication, strengthening relationships, and other issues.

No Time to Waste: Programs to Reduce Teen Pregnancy Among Middle School-Aged Youth [pdf 400K]. This National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy publication provides detailed descriptions of programs for middle school-aged youth that have been shown through careful research to have a positive impact on adolescent behavior.

Not Yet: Programs to Delay First Sex Among Teens [pdf 500K]. This document, published by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, provides detailed descriptions of programs that have been shown through careful research to have delayed sexual initiation for teens.

Parents Matter! is an evidence-based prevention program for parents of pre-teens. This community-level family prevention program is designed to enhance protective parenting practices and promote parent-child discussions about sexuality and sexual risk reduction.

Preventing Teenage Pregnancy, Childbearing, and Sexually Transmitted Diseases: What the Research Shows [pdf 131K]. Published by Child Trends, this research brief highlights factors that contribute to improved adolescent reproductive health. The brief also includes a table of specific programs that have been found to be successful in increasing positive reproductive health behaviors.

Someone at School has AIDS: A Complete Guide to Education Policies Concerning HIV Infection [pdf 31K]. This guide, published by the National Association of State Boards of Education, provides guidance on developing policies that address important issues related to HIV/AIDS in the schools.

What Education Leaders Should Know about Forming Partnerships to Prevent Sexual-Risk Behaviors in School-Aged Youth  [pdf 180K]. This fact sheet was developed by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), and describes the collaboration process, examples of potential partners and how top level education officials can support and improve interagency partnerships to prevent sexual risk behaviors in school-aged youth.

What Education Leaders Should Know about HIV and AIDS [pdf 180K]. Developed by CCSSO, this fact sheet describes the basic facts of HIV; background, differences between HIV and AIDS, HIV transmission and the impact of HIV/AIDS among school-aged youth.

This fact sheet, developed by CCSSO, provides information on why school-aged youth are at risk for HIV/AIDS, lists school-based prevention strategies, and describes potential roles of family and community partners in addressing school-based prevention.
