National Irrigation Water Quality Program

Welcome

The NIWQP is an intra-departmental program that evaluates Department of the Interior irrigation projects to:

Consider drainwater contamination and related impacts to endangered species and/or migratory birds

Assess legal responsibilities that are associated with environmental laws

Develop and implement alternatives for remediation

The program also evaluates irrigation drainwater impacts to refuges and is responsible for remediation of such impacts, provided the source of contamination is an Interior irrigation project. Program participants are the Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). These agencies work cooperatively to resolve endangered species and/or migratory bird treaty issues on Reclamation and BIA irrigation projects. See the 2001 brochure describing the NIWQP:

Program Status

Due to a significant reduction in program funding in FY2005, the majority of program activities were suspended. The website provides current data for other associated programs, research activities, and the status of each project in FY2005. This serves as an invaluable foundation for ongoing research activities and future remediation in these project areas.

Web Site Host

Bureau of Reclamation has participated in this program and hosts this site for the other program participants (U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs). Reclamation and the other program participants' Web sites can always be found via the links in the left-hand column.
