Technical References are generally lengthier than Technical Notes and may be produced as a collection of related documents about one subject, issued under a single BLM subject code. Although the information contained in a Technical Reference cannot establish policy, it can become policy through subsequent issuance as a directive, such as an Instruction Memorandum from Washington or a BLM Manual Section.

Begun in 1966 as a forum for BLM employees, Technical Notes encompass resource management topics such as ecological surveys, inventories, and monitoring; analytical methods and techniques; applied research; resource assessments; risk management; and model interpretation and estimation. Each Technical Note deals with a single subject.

Resource Notes are publications from the National Science and Technology Center to spotlight and communicate new technology, unusual field applications, specialized resource information, or significant technical happenings in BLM. They are designed to communicate to a wide audience information that may not receive wide distribution in other ways. Anyone may be an author of an article and minimum screening and editing will be done to the material submitted.
Resource Notes are intended to be early announcements of technical and informational topics for Bureau of Land Management personnel and some of their customers. Information in Resource Notes is based on the experience of the author and is typically not peer-reviewed. Conclusions and opinions expressed herein do not necessarily represent those of BLM. Use of trade names does not imply U.S. Government endorsement of commercial products.
