Valerie Key

My name is Valerie Key, and I am blind. I have noticed here in the city of Baltimore that some intersections are starting to have these beeping traffic signals, and this bothers me because I wonder why they are there cluttering up the environment. The city wasted money, I think, putting these signals up because the streets where they are operating simply are not problems for people like me to cross. I can think of other street crossings in and around Baltimore which are more difficult for a blind person to cross but which do not have devices that help the blind. What is wrong with this picture?

I don’t think you need special traffic signals for the blind at every street light. If you had such things everywhere, the noise (beep, beep, beep) would drive everybody crazy. But if you could find a way to set these things up at difficult street crossings, then that would be much better. I think you should not make any rules on such lights.

Thank you for listening.

Sincerely,
Valerie Key
