UNWANTED PESTICIDE DISPOSAL PROGRAM

Register NOW to dispose of your unwanted pesticides for FREE

Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation members asked for an environmentally sound, inexpensive, and legal way to dispose of old pesticides. Disposal of these products is costly and can be a regulatory nightmare. Farm Bureau proposed a solution to the State legislature and they and the Hawaii Department of Agriculture agreed to a free program to collect and dispose of unwanted, unused, or unusable pesticides. Registration is now underway!

Do you qualify for this FREE program?

Yes, if you are a farmer, landscaper, or other agricultural operation.

What items are acceptable for disposal?

Any pesticides (including insecticides, rodenticides, fungicides, and herbicides) that you cannot use due to product age or loss of label, or that you no longer need, or that have been taken out of use (DDT, EDB, endrin, chlordane).

Household hazardous wastes are not accepted at these collections, however other free programs will accept them.

NO fertilizers, motor oils, paint, solvents, or other non-pesticides can be accepted.

What if I can't identify the chemicals I have?

Fill out the registration form and list the chemical as "unknown". Write down whatever you do know about the product and the contractor will help to identify it and dispose of it.

How do I participate?

Sign up now

Your name will not appear on any disposal document and you will not be responsible for the cost of disposal or incur regulatory liability. You will only be identified by the I.D. number assigned to you by the contractor.

Is there a limit to how much I can get rid of?

No limit! Free for up to 200 pounds per participant. If over 200 pounds--approximately $2 per pound for excess.

Where will collections take place?

Collections are being planned for 6 locations throughout Hawaii; Oahu, Molokai, Maui, Kauai, and 2 locations on the Big Island.

When will collections take place?

Registration is required and must be completed by January 31, 2009 so that preparations to handle and transport the waste can be made and an environmental assessment completed. Collection events will then be scheduled, and participants who registered will be advised when and where the collections will be. It is expected that these events will take place in the Summer and Fall of 2009.

You must register to participate. Forms are available from the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation, pesticide dealers, the Landscape Industry Council of Hawaii, EnviroServices and Training Center, and the Hawaii Pest Control Association.

This may be a one-time event.

If you are an agricultural or commercial pesticide user and have unwanted pesticides you should take advantage of this program! Then plan future pesticide purchases to meet your immediate needs.
