Fires, smoke, and Saharan dust in West Africa

Africa’s north-of-the-equator fire season is still underway on January 28, 2003. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image captured by the Aqua satellite shows scores of fires (red dots) mingling their smoke with Saharan dust blowing out over the Atlantic. Countries shown are clockwise from top left) Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, and The Gambia.
