Lesson Plan 4.2

Objectives:
The student will review the procedure for drawing escape plans.

  • The student will understand the behaviors involved in escaping a fire.

  • The student will learn how to conduct an exit drill in the home.

Time:
40 Minutes

Materials Needed:
VCR/T.V.
Home Fire Evacuation Video
N.F.P.A. Edith Handout

Activity: Approx. Time:

  1. Review home work assignment. Choose several students plans and discuss the alternate escape routes chosen. Comment on choices where there is a roof to get onto or a way available to get down from the 2nd floor. Stress need for smoke detectors to allow more time to accomplish escape. 10 Minutes

  2. Review escape behaviors from sheet handed out in previous session. Show "Home Fire Evacuation Video". 15 Minutes

  3. Distribute "E.D.I.T.H." handouts. Present procedure to conduct a home fire drill. First one should be announced ahead of time so family members can practice skills. List the procedures on the board.
    1. Have a family meeting
    2. Draw up an escape plan
    3. Decide on a day and time for the drill
    4. Choose a location for the fire and why
    5. Use paper cutouts to show the place of the fire
    6. Have family members use the best exit (primary or alternate) depending on fire
    7. Have all who escape meet at meeting place
    8. Designate one person to go to a neighbor's house to call Fire Department
    9. Conduct the drill
    10. Evaluate how everyone did
    11. Work to improve for future drills 15 Minutes
