Directors' Message |

Corrections Employees Week
Governor Ted Kulongoski proclaimed May 4-10, 2003 as National Correctional Employees week. We join him and the rest of the nation in recognizing your hard work and diligence during these uncertain times. Despite the challenges we face locally and internationally, the quality of service we provide to the community has continued to grow stronger in the last year thanks to your efforts to preserve our department standards.
We extend our gratitude for your commitment to:
- Making Oregon a safer place by holding offenders accountable for their actions while reducing the risk of future criminal behavior;
- Continuing our growth as a department through participating in education and training opportunities;
- Acting as productive and dedicated members of Oregon’s workforce; and
- Carrying out the department’s mission, values, and goals with enthusiasm and pride.
- We encourage you to take a moment to reflect on how your efforts have contributed to our success and progress as a department in serving the citizens of Oregon. We are truly appreciative to be supported by such a strong and capable workforce.
Warm regards,

Dome Building Security |

Dome Building Security Tightens
The department recently evaluated Dome Building access and took some steps to improve security:
- Dome Building reception area staff will ask for photo I.D. from all visitors, including DOC staff from other buildings. Where appropriate, the receptionist will call the person being visited to request a visitor escort.
- The primary entry point to the Dome Building will be the front doors. The back door will remain locked and a sign will require visitors to use the front entrance. Back-door access is restricted to staff with keys.
- The Dome Building reception area is staffed from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. The front doors will be unlocked and available for public access only during those hours. If you have business in the building outside those hours, please arrange in advance with a Dome staffer for access.
- As you enter and leave any DOC building, please be vigilant and check for things or activities that look out of place or not normally there. Report questionable activities or problems immediately.
- If you have any questions regarding Dome Building security measures, please contact Debra Slater at (503) 945-9232 or by e-mail at debra.slater@doc.state.or.us.

PERS Postings |

2002 Member Statements
PERS Member Annual Statements for 2002 will be sent out early this month, and there are some changes in format. To see a sample and explanations of the new format, go to: www.pers.state.or.us/NewsRelease/NewsReleasePDFfiles/annual%20statement%20pop%20up.pdf
Your Annual Statement includes contributions and earnings added to your retirement account for the year ending December 31, 2002. The statement does not include employer contributions, which will fund the employer portion of your pension. PERS is not including a benefit estimate due to potential legislation. You can find a benefit estimate calculator at www.pers.state.or.us.
“Turn In Forms Days” Retirement Application Assistance
PERS is offering special assistance in filling out service retirement applications for members retiring in May, June, or July 2003. These presentations will allow PERS staff to review applications to ensure they are accurate and complete.
These are not group counseling sessions. The sessions are only to review and accept retirement applications. Each session will begin with a 45-minute presentation to help fill out the forms. Following the presentation, PERS staff will be on hand to look over applications and answer questions. If you are within 90 days of retiring, you may also submit your completed forms to begin the retirement process.
All “Turn In Forms” presentations require pre-registration and will be held at PERS Headquarters in Tigard. For more information, go to the PERS Web site at: http://www.pers.state.or.us/Schedules/Retirement_Appl_Assist.htm.

INS Detainers |
|
Agency Name Change
The federal Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) recently became part of the Department of Homeland Security. Their name has also changed to the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
OISC (Offender Information and Sentence Calculation) has begun entering detainers using the new agency abbreviation of “ICE” instead of “INS.” By mid-May, OISC staff expect to have all prior “INS” detainers converted on the DOC400 to “ICE” detainers.
If you have questions please contact OISC Technical Support Manager Gina Raney at (503) 570-6914 or by e-mail: gina.raney@doc.state.or.us
