Director's Message
We’ve been talking a lot lately about the ways the Department of Corrections is helping offenders to successfully transition back to Oregon’s communities after release from prison. One of the most exciting transition projects is “Home for Good in Oregon,” a collaborative partnership between the Oregon Department of Corrections and faith-based organizations and individuals.

This corrections, community, and faith-based re-entry partnership is led by DOC Religious Services Administrator Tom O’Connor and Chaplain Tim Cayton. It brings together people of all faiths to help offenders return to their families and communities with a social support structure that can make the difference between success and failure.

These partnerships include developing housing options for released offenders, ensuring that they receive the human services support they need, accessing possible veterans’ benefits, working to find offenders employment, and connecting them to their communities.

By improving transition, we do reduce the risk of future criminal behavior. We ensure that there are fewer victims of crime, because our partnerships will help ensure many crimes never occur. We make families stronger and communities safer.

Be proud of what we do.

Sincerely,
Max Williams signatureSignature for Max Williams and Mitch Morrow

Handgun Locks Available to Staff
Project ChildSafe, the nation’s largest firearm safety education program has begun the second phase of its nationwide campaign to promote safe and responsible gun ownership and storage. The program reminds gun owners to take steps to prevent a loaded gun from falling into the hands of a child, thereby preventing tragic accidents.

Project ChildSafe was created and is managed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (for more information, go to: www.projectchildsafe.org). They partner with government agencies and local law enforcement nationwide to promote firearm safety at the local level and to distribute firearm safety kits free of charge to gun owners.

DOC joined this partnership and recently received gunlocks for staff members. The locks will soon be distributed to staff free of charge. If you work in a prison, please contact your superintendent or security manager for details; non-prison staff should contact Operations Division Exec Support Specialist Betty Blaylock by e-mail to: betty.blaylock@state.or.us.

  • Be equipped with a high temperature-limiting device and have built-in tip over protection.
  • Be unplugged at the end of each workday.

Personal heaters such as “Cozy Legs” and “Ergo Comfort” footrests are approved for under desks. The following guidelines apply specifically to these devices:
  • Maintain a minimum of 12 inches clearance from any combustibles.
  • Use according to the manufacturer´s instructions.
  •   Personal heaters must be shut off and unplugged at the end of each workday.

If you have questions or concerns about heaters or other appliances, contact your local safety committee.
