Work Crew Walkaway Quickly Captured

Inmate James Gary Tacia #8659280 walked away from his work crew in North Salem shortly after 11 a.m. today and was quickly captured by a Marion County sheriff's deputy.

Tacia was a member of a minimum-custody 10-man work crew from Mill Creek Correctional Facility assigned to pick up litter in the Claggett Creek area. He was noted missing by the correctional officer supervising the crew at 11:20 a.m., and law enforcement was immediately notified.

Tacia subsequently stole a rental truck and was apprehended by a Marion County deputy sheriff at approximately 12:45 following a brief chase.

Tacia is serving 34 months from Jackson County on convictions for burglary, theft, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and witness tampering. He was admitted to prison in October 2006 and his projected release date was November 2008.

The Oregon State Police are investigating.
