Posted: October 25th, 2007 10:00 AM
The unexpected death of an Oregon State Penitentiary inmate in his housing unit Tuesday is being investigated by Oregon State Police detectives.
On October 23, 2007 at approximately 11:58 a.m., officers responded to a man-down call in C-Block, a general population housing unit at the penitentiary in Salem. Penitentiary staff responded as well as paramedics from the Salem Fire Department. Efforts to resuscitate Terry L. Steinhoff, age 43, were unsuccessful. There were no visible signs of trauma noted.
Oregon State Police detectives are continuing the investigation. An autopsy was completed Wednesday and toxicology test results are pending to help determine a cause of death.
Steinhoff was admitted to prison in January 1989 from Coos County for murder. His projected release date was September 2009.
