Gastrointestinal Illness Eases at Shutter Creek Correctional Institution
Shutter Creek Correctional Institution is returning to normal operations today following a gastrointestinal illness among inmates at the institution during the weekend. Corrections officials continue to work with state public health authorities to determine the cause of the illness.
Approximately one-third of the inmates at the institution experienced illness, including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, beginning Thursday and continuing Friday. Over the weekend, no new cases of illness were reported. In addition symptoms began to diminish in those who were afflicted. Only a handful of inmates reported any symptoms this morning. During the course of the illness, no inmates required outside medical attention.
Normal weekend visiting hours for the institution are anticipated for next Saturday and Sunday; and off site inmate work crews are being reinstated.
Shutter Creek Correctional Institution is a minimum-security prison in North Bend with 280 beds. The population today is 16 women and 231 men.
