Statement of Department of Corrections
regarding employee under investigation
January 19, 2007

An Oregon Department of Corrections employee was recently placed on administrative leave as a result of an ongoing criminal investigation jointly conducted by federal and state authorities.

A search warrant was executed on January 10, 2007, at the agency’s Central Distribution Center located in Salem with the full cooperation of the Department of Corrections.

At this time the investigation does not appear to involve any inmates or activities in any DOC prison facilities and no arrests have been made. Because this is an ongoing investigation, the Department of Corrections cannot provide additional details.

"We are of course disappointed that allegations have surfaced regarding a department employee. We hold ourselves – and all employees - to the highest ethical standards and we take very seriously any suggestion that those standards have been violated," said Max Williams, director of the Oregon Department of Corrections. "The Department of Corrections will fully cooperate in every way to ensure that justice is served."

The investigation was initiated by federal authorities and as it progressed, included the Oregon Department of Justice, the Oregon State Police, the Internal Revenue Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US Attorney’s Office, in collaboration with the Department of Corrections’ Inspector General’s office and its Special Investigations Unit.
