Scott, Pope Receive Statewide Corrections Awards

The Oregon Department of Corrections honored outstanding employees at its annual awards ceremony in Salem last week. Among those recognized was Cindi Scott, manager of the Turning Point program at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville and Carole Pope, a volunteer and director of Project Linkup at the women's prison. Scott was selected as the Department of Corrections' 2006 Contractor of the Year and Pope was named 2006 Outstanding Volunteer of the Year.

The Contractor of the Year Award is presented to an individual working on contract with the Department of Corrections who has made a significant contribution toward the department's mission, vision and values. The Volunteer of the Year Award is presented to a citizen who has worked diligently and capably on behalf of the Oregon Department of Corrections. Both awards were presented by Coffee Creek Superintendent Bill Hoefel.

Superintendent Hoefel commended Scott for her work that resulted in significant improvements in operational efficiencies and client services. "Cindi is intelligent and an expert in the field of addiction and criminality, and motivational interviewing," Hoefel said. " She is an exceptional leader and has extremely high levels of energy, passion, vitality.

"Cindi believes in her staff and clients, working tirelessly with the Department of Corrections to make the Turning Point program a success. Through her good communication, sharing of information, mutual problem solving and collaboration, she has built relationships with other program providers, security staff and the facility management staff."

Of Pope, Hoefel said, "Carole Pope was a DOC inmate in the late 1970s. She left that part of her life behind after her release and devoted her life to recovery and transition for female offenders in Multnomah County.

"Her program – New Beginnings – was an alternative for the courts and community corrections. When Coffee Creek was under construction, Carole contacted us about helping women at the new prison through written materials," Hoefel said. "Carole also offers her services to inmates as a direct resource, corresponding with inmate parents across the state, and we honor her work with this award."

In commending the work of all of the statewide the award recipients, Corrections Director Max Williams said, "We are here to honor the truly outstanding work done by the staff, contractors and volunteers of the Oregon Department of Corrections, some of the best in Oregon state government.

"By working together as individuals and as an agency, we are moving forward with initiatives and projects that help us to better accomplish our mission – to promote public safety by holding offenders accountable for their actions and reducing the risk of future criminal behavior."
