Hooley Receives Statewide Corrections Award

The Oregon Department of Corrections honored outstanding employees at its annual awards ceremony in Salem last week. Among those recognized was Parole and Probation Officer Chris Hooley of Douglas County Community Corrections. Hooley was selected as the Department of Corrections' 2006 Employee of the Year.

Hooley was recognized for her outstanding commitment to public safety and the Oregon Department of Corrections. Among other things she developed a canine narcotics detection program to combat drug use – particularly methamphetamine – in the community. She and her dog Gunter are now certified as a narcotics detection K-9 team by both DrugBeat K-9 Certifications and by the Oregon Police Canine Association. Additionally, she and Gunter regularly make presentations to the public and assist local law enforcement.

In presenting her with the statewide award, DOC Director Max Williams noted, "Chris's initiative and dedication generate good relations with the community and shine a positive light on our profession and our agency."

In commending the work of the award recipients, Director Williams said, "We are here to honor the truly outstanding work done by the staff, contractors and volunteers of the Oregon Department of Corrections, some of the best in Oregon state government.

"By working together as individuals and as an agency, we are moving forward with initiatives and projects that help us to better accomplish our mission – to promote public safety by holding offenders accountable for their actions and reducing the risk of future criminal behavior."
