Inmate Escapes from Shutter Creek Correctional Institution

A minimum-custody inmate was discovered missing this afternoon from Shutter Creek Correctional Institution in North Bend.

Preliminary information indicates that he may be heading from the Coos Bay area to the Klamath Falls area or northern California.

The inmate, Steven Wade Sharp, 34, is a white male with brown hair and grey eyes. He is 6' tall and weighs 175 lbs.

Sharp was incarcerated in July for first-degree theft from Coos County. His projected release date was in April 2006.

During the 4 p.m. count of inmates, Sharp was not present. He was not found during a search of the prison. His method of escape is under investigation.

Shutter Creek Correctional Institution is a minimum-custody prison. Today's midnight census was 270. It is known for the Oregon Summit Program, an intensive incarceration program that teaches inmates new cognitive and behavioral skills. Sharp was not enrolled in the Summit Program; rather he was assigned to the prison's general population.

The Oregon State Police, the Coos County Sheriff, and local police departments as well as the Department of Corrections Fugitive Apprehension Unit are investigating.

Anyone with information about Sharp's whereabouts is encouraged to call 9-1-1.
