Update: Inmate attacks officer at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution
At 8:15 this morning at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution (EOCI) in Pendleton, Inmate Alan Arthur Watkins stabbed Correctional Officer James Hinkle with a homemade metal shank. The officer was transported to St. Anthony’s Hospital and was treated and released.
The unprovoked attack occurred in a housing area on the east side of the 1,600-bed men’s medium-security facility.
The weapon used has been recovered, and the attacker confined in disciplinary segregation. Oregon State Police are on-site to investigate.
The prison has been placed on lockdown and visiting is cancelled today. The lockdown status will be assessed throughout the day and modified as needed.
Officer Hinkle began his career at EOCI in November 1994.
Watkins is serving a life sentence from Benton County for Aggravated Murder. He was admitted to prison in 1997.
