Coffee Creek Staff Win Statewide Recognition
The Oregon Department of Corrections recently held its annual statewide awards ceremony in Salem. Recognition was given to staff who had been selected as award recipients for 2004-2005.

Coffee Creek Correctional Facility (CCCF) had several people honored with awards, including employees, a contractor, and a volunteer.

Royce Marlin, CCCF’s Physical Plant Manager, was given the Outstanding Service Award. At the presentation, Superintendent Bill Hoefel noted that Mr. Marlin has demonstrated exceptional leadership by role modeling ethical and professional conduct as well as a commitment to ensure the physical plant operation set an example for others to emulate. He takes the time to interact with inmates who work in the physical plant office, encouraging them to think about their actions and giving them positive reinforcement. They understand that he is a no-nonsense manager when it comes to security and respect. Mr. Marlin takes his personal time to attend inmate programs, such as WICS graduations on Saturdays, and takes an active role in the annual TACE event for the inmates and their children.

Mary Raines, CCCF Acting Health Services Manager, was honored as the Department’s Manager of the Year. Ms. Raines has continually exemplified the values and mission of DOC and CCCF, according to Superintendent Hoefel. She is resourceful and skilled at maintaining smooth operations while meeting the needs of inmates and staff. Due to the continuing shortage of nurses at CCCF, her willingness to work nursing shifts with staff is a quality that many of her co-workers and supervisors admire. Her willingness to share her knowledge and experience continues to make an enormous impact on the Department.

Religious Services volunteer Fran Howard was selected as the Department’s Volunteer of the Year. She is the founder and director of Freedom in the Son (FITS), a non-profit organization that provides outreach to women in prison, women in transition (releasing from prison) and their children. FITS began serving inmates in the Oregon Women’s Correctional Center in 1986. The mentoring program was added in 1991. All FITS programs serve inmates at CCCF. Ms. Howard and the FITS volunteers spend nearly every holiday with CCCF inmates to provide a special celebration.

Kelly Shannon, CCCF’s Eye Glass Recycling Coordinator, was honored as the Department’s Contractor of the Year. She manages the Lion’s Club Eyeglass Recycling program for inmates at Coffee Creek and has expanded it into a dispensing optician training program, providing professional-level certification testing. Through this exam and her training program, students are made immediately employable. Several of the inmates who graduated from this program and have been released are employed in the optical field and one is enrolled in an advanced optical degree program.

Larry Bennett, CCCF’s Intake Program Coordinator, was honored as the Operations Division Employee of the Year. Mr. Bennett’s nomination notes that he is always willing to tackle new challenges, has extended himself well beyond the expectations of his position, and has done an excellent job in every endeavor undertaken. The key reason for his nomination and selection as Operations Employee of the Year is that he brings such a positive attitude and commitment to his work.
