SCCI Escapee Captured
The actions of an alert correctional lieutenant from Shutter Creek Correctional Institution (SCCI) in Hauser led to the apprehension of Inmate Steven Sharp, who escaped from SCCI on Thursday, September 29, 2005.
While traveling through Reedsport on Sunday evening, October 2, 2005, Lt. Ray Herning observed Inmate Steven Sharp walking on the side of Hwy. 38. Lt. Herning notified the Reedsport Police Department, and officers from Reedsport immediately made contact with the suspect. With the assistance of SCCI’s lieutenant, they confirmed the suspect’s identity as Inmate Steven Sharp. After being taken into custody, Inmate Sharp was transported to the Coos County Jail.
Inmate Sharp’s convictions include first-degree theft and first-degree burglary from Coos County. He had been scheduled to be released in April 2006. Although the case is still under investigation, additional charges on escape are likely.
