Prison Distrubance Ends Without Injury
Distrubance at TRCI Invovled Nine Imates

For Immediate Release: February 28, 2001

Nine inmates participated in a disturbance at Two Rivers Correctional Institution in Umatilla late Wednesday evening, February 28, 2001.

Preliminary information indicates that the inmates began acting out at approximately 9:48 p.m., causing other inmates in the 96-bed housing unit to lock themselves in their cells. Officers on the housing unit secured themselves in the unit control point.

At no point was this a hostage situation.

The prison's Tactical Emergency Response Team (TERT) evacuated the staff through an emergency exit. They then proceeded to take control of the unit at approximately 10:52 p.m. No injuries have been reported by staff or inmates. Property damage will be assessed in the morning.

An emergency count of inmates has been conducted and cleared. The prison is locked down until the situation, including its causes, has been evaluated.

The incident is under investigation by Department of Corrections investigators and the Oregon State Police.
