Two Rivers Inmate Found Dead
Suicide at TRCI

For Release: July 24, 2001

In an apparent suicide, an inmate was found dead in his cell this morning at Two Rivers Correctional Institution in Umatilla. He was discovered shortly after 10 a.m. by correctional officers during a routine tier check.

Inmate Jose Saul Jacquez, 47, was alone in the double cell when discovered with a cord around his neck.

Prison medical staff was summoned immediately to the general housing unit, and efforts to resuscitate the inmate were futile. He was pronounced dead at 10:20 a.m.

Inmate Jacquez was first admitted to the Department of Corrections in 1991 from Umatilla County for kidnapping, sodomy and rape. The crimes were committed under the old system of sentencing that preceded 1989's sentencing guidelines so he was eligible for parole. He was paroled in 1994 and subsequently failed on parole in December 2000 and was returned to prison in March 2001. He was transferred to Two Rivers Correctional Institution in May 2001. His earliest release date was in May 2002.

The official cause of death will be determined by the Umatilla County medical examiner. Oregon State Police are investigating.
